What is Depression?

Depression is a complex mental health condition that affects millions of people globally. It's more than just feeling down or having a rough day; it's a persistent state of sadness and loss of interest in activities that once brought joy.

How Depression Affects Individuals

Addressing Depression

If symptoms of depression are affecting daily life, discussing them with a qualified healthcare professional can help identify appropriate next steps. Treatments can include therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, and strong support networks. Societal efforts, such as mental health awareness campaigns and improved access to care, are essential to provide the necessary support and reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues.

Understanding depression's impact can lead to more compassionate support systems and proactive mental health strategies, helping individuals lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Understanding Depression and the DSM-5

The DSM-5 provides diagnostic criteria used by qualified mental health professionals when assessing mental health conditions, including major depressive disorder. Ember does not provide a diagnosis. Its role is limited to structured PHQ-9 screening.

The following are common symptoms associated with depression:

To be diagnosed with major depressive disorder, according to DSM-5 criteria, a person must experience at least five of these symptoms for a period of at least two weeks, with at least one symptom being either persistent sadness or loss of interest/pleasure. These symptoms must cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Diagnosis requires a broader clinical assessment and cannot be determined from PHQ-9 responses alone.
